It’s 23 December. Your out-of-office is on. Your laptop is, technically, closed.
Then it arrives. “Sorry, quick one.”
The laptop is open again before you’ve popped your first bonbon.
Every payroll manager in the country has a greatest-hits collection of things said to them in December. You know the ones:
So-and-so is right. You do know. That’s the problem.
Because every year you promise yourself that next Christmas will be different. Feet up, a proper break, actual downtime.
But that resolution rarely outlasts the Chrissy leftovers. By the time December comes back around, it’s too late.
You are the reason hundreds, maybe thousands of people got paid correctly and on time this year.
You don’t need another pizza party to thank you for your hard work. You need a real holiday.
Here are the six reasons the best payroll managers never get Christmas off, and the one thing that fixes it.
Forty per cent of Australian payroll professionals report burnout. At large employers it’s 46%. At small ones, 28%.
The people going under are the ones running the biggest payrolls in the country. And 31.2% expect to change jobs within twelve months. (Australian Payroll Association, 2023)
Only 43% of Australian businesses employ a dedicated payroll professional at all. That’s the lowest rate in Asia-Pacific.
Staffing is the number one challenge for 92% of payroll teams, and a third say their organisation is already at risk because payroll is understaffed. (ADP, 2025; Deel, 2025)
You’ve always managed before, so everyone assumes you always will.
A Queensland court took a different view. It awarded $1.1 million in damages to a payroll supervisor for psychological injury caused by understaffing and excessive workload. (Ackers v Cairns Regional Council [2021] QSC 342)
Every payroll has rules that live outside the system. The award interpretation nobody wrote down. All those workarounds still holding it together. And they all live in your head.
Public holidays, casual surge staff, leave loading, shutdown provisions. All landing in the same few pay runs. It pulls you back in like a magnet.
The guilt about the timing. The certainty you’ll come back to a mess. And you take two weeks off just to spend three weeks catching up.
Which might explain why Australians are sitting on 209 million days of untaken annual leave. (Roy Morgan, September 2025)
Until now, you had three options:
No other critical function in the business would be allowed to run that way without a Plan B.
So here’s a fourth option.
Need a safe pair of hands to run payroll exactly the way you do?
Payroll Experts’ Payroll Processing Service (PPS) exists so payroll doesn’t stop when you do. It’s a business continuity solution built to remove key-person dependency from medium-to-large pay runs.
There are two parts to the process.
